Took awhile to get around to this, but holy crap, is it good. Finally had some spare time and decided to sample some Stringdusters based almost entirely on your tireless raving (the good kind) about this band. Decided to start with this one:

When the road repair crew shows up for work this AM, they may notice a subtle difference in the destruction I left behind. Not Dead-induced rubble, but nuclear bluegrass. Outstanding. Looks like I've found a good reason to start an alternate listening period.
Oh, yeah, the quality of the matrix is about as good as it gets. Easily could be a commercial release as is.

So, if you're looking to give Jerry a little rest, I can't think of a better substitute.

Couldn't agree more. I've been obsessed with the Stringdusters for several months now. Went to a show fairly recently, and the obsession grew even more. I can't recommend these guys enough. They blow me away. The playing is incredibly tight, and I have yet to hear a modern “bluegrass” band that can sound like an old bluegrass band, as well as a modern band that really expands on what bluegrass music can be, if that makes sense.

These guys can jam, they can sing and harmonize beautifully, they can write good songs, they do outstanding takes on old classics, they bring the passion and the soul to the music that Jerry did, and they do indeed have the “IT” factor. It amazes me they are not more popular. Forget Railroad Earth or YMSB, the Stringdusters are where it's at if you're looking for the best modern bluegrass-style band. These are the shows I've listened to the most:

08/19/07
10/05/07
07/18/09
10/15/10
04/22/12
11/03/12

These guys are on fire right now. Check out any recent show as well to hear them tear shit up. Here's a handy link as well. Just click on a show to listen:

Side note: just a coincidence that my 1st 2 posts in awhile were in response to threads by you. Didn't want you to flatter yourself too much ;-)

Agree that the Dusters are a very good band, but "forget Railroad Earth"?!? Not by a long shot my friend.

While RRE's sound may be evolving & getting (depending upon the song) a little heavier (less bluegrassy, more jamgrass rock, which I think is a smart move btw) when they want to put on their bluegrass shoes they can pick with the best of them.

But to each their own--you like vanilla, I prefer chocolate.

I didn't intend to imply that you should forget about RRE. I LOVE RRE and Yonder, particularly RRE. I was trying to make the point that if you're looking for the best modern bluegrass-oriented music, that the Dusters are even better than RRE and YMSB.

I've realized it greatly helps to double check posts before submitting them, to ensure they make sense to others (a practice WT would surely benefit from lol. Love his posts, but I have to read them SLOWly to make sure I understand his ramblings.)

Hey, if I don't flatter myself, no one else will. So excuse me if I take 100% credit for your resurgence.
